Bleeding gums? Here’s what your smile is telling you

Understand bleeding gums and when to ask a dentist for help.

A natural healthy smile

Do not ignore bleeding gums

Gums that bleed when you brush or clean between your teeth may be a sign of gum disease. Plaque can build up around the teeth and irritate the gums. Bleeding has other possible causes too, so an examination matters.

What can you do at home?

Brush gently twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily. Avoid aggressive scrubbing. A dentist can show you a cleaning method suited to your teeth and gums.

When to see a dentist

Arrange a dental assessment if your gums bleed, are swollen or painful, or if you have persistent bad breath. Loose teeth or severe swelling need prompt attention. Facial swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing requires urgent medical care.
